Why Foot Work Comes First

If you have taken class at REBEL, you have probably noticed we almost always start with Foot Work. And while it might seem like a warm-up, it is doing a lot more than just waking up your legs.

Here is why we begin with it:

1. It builds connection from the ground up

Your feet are your foundation. Each press, each heel lift, and each pause helps activate the muscles in your legs and core. Foot work sets the tone for strength and alignment throughout the rest of class.

2. It resets posture

When done with focus, foot work helps correct imbalances and retrains your body to distribute weight evenly. That leads to better posture during everyday movements like standing, walking, and even sitting.

3. It improves balance and coordination

Strong feet create a more stable base. Foot work strengthens the small muscles in your feet and ankles, which supports balance and reduces the risk of injury.

4. It activates the nervous system

Your feet have thousands of nerve endings. Stimulating them at the start of class helps wake up your proprioception, which is your body’s sense of where it is in space. That helps you feel more connected in every single movement.

Foot work is not just tradition. It is smart, strategic, and foundational to a strong, intentional practice. From glutes to core to posture and beyond, it all starts at your feet.
