The Other Half of the Work

You've probably heard me say this in class before...

The part of your body that's moving is only doing half the work. The other half is happening in your torso, keeping everything stable.

Think about it.

When you're moving your leg, your core is working to keep your pelvis and spine stable.

When you're reaching an arm, your torso is working to keep you from tipping or twisting.

And when we're in quadruped, on our hands and knees, that becomes really obvious. Lift one arm or leg and suddenly the rest of your body has to figure out how to keep you steady.

That's one of the reasons we move slowly and with control in Pilates.

It's not just about the movement. It's about what your body is doing to support that movement.

And sometimes, the slower you go, the more you notice just how much work is happening.

So this week, I want you to pay attention to the parts of your body that AREN'T moving.

What muscles are working to keep you stable? Can you move an arm or leg without the rest of your body coming along for the ride?

That's where some of the really good stuff happens.

See you on the reformer
